Florverde® Sustainable Flowers and environmental issues
How does Florverde® Sustainable Flowers help to combat climate change?
FSF encourages growers to adopt energy efficient processes and requires them to minimize the use of energy intensive inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides. Growers must also carry out preventive maintenance of electric equipment and carry out reforestation activities using native species.
Does Florverde® Sustainable Flowers help reduce water use?
Yes, the FSF standard encourages growers to collect and use rainwater for irrigation. Today about 62% of the water used to irrigate FSF flowers comes from rainwater. Secondly, FSF requires growers to employ water efficient irrigation technologies in greenhouses and to monitor water usage. Additionally, growers must develop and implement a five-year plan that optimizes water consumption.
Does Florverde® Sustainable Flowers allow the use of pesticides and fertilizers?
FSF encourages the reduction of chemical products that pose dangers to people and the environment. It does so by first encouraging growers to use alternative forms of pest control and fertilization. This might include Integrated Crop Management techniques, natural compost or mechanical alternatives to pesticides. If fertilizers are needed, they must be applied using soil analysis. Also, growers are prohibited from using banned chemicals as listed by the World Health Organization, U.S. EPA, European Union authorities and national laws.
